With the blessed assurance of his faith and salvation through Jesus Christ, Gene Everett Swanberg entered into his heavenly reward at the age of 93. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend and his final days were spent surrounded by family who will miss him dearly.
Gene was born in Austin, Texas on December 18, 1930 and passed away on March 4, 2024. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Nell Swanberg, three daughters, Valerie Sporn (Gary), Kathy Dyke (Jerry), Teresa Thompson (Tommy) and one son, Randy Swanberg (Lisa); eleven grandchildren, Brian Roberts (Rachel), Brooks Roberts (Dana), Blake Roberts (Brittney), Jeffrey Dyke (Alyssa), Dylan Thompson (Wendy), Mitchell Thompson (Beth), Wesley Thompson (Kerry), Justin Swanberg (Abby), Savannah Arguelles (Roman), Miranda Swanberg and Tyler Swanberg; sixteen great-grandchildren, Shannah Roberts, Bowen Roberts, Brewer Roberts, Everly Roberts, Selah Dyke, Asher Dyke, Hudson Dyke, Carly Thompson, Clay Thompson, Claire Thompson, Clint Thompson, Emilyn Thompson, James Thompson, Trey Thompson, Tucker Thompson and Myles Arguelles. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Elof and Agda Swanberg, one sister, Dorothy Daniel, one brother, Floyd Swanberg, and one great-grandchild, Declan Roberts.
Gene graduated from Manor High School in 1948 and was initially employed by the Texas Insurance Checking Office in Austin. He later began his 32 year career with the State of Texas on September 1, 1952, retiring December 31, 1984. He then obtained his Realtors License and worked in this profession for 18 years. Gene served in the Texas National Guard for 30 years, retiring as the Finance Sergeant Major for the 49th Armored Division on December 31, 1980. One of his highlights serving in the Guard was meeting and chauffeuring Captain Audie Murphy (World War II’s most decorated soldier) during summer camp at North Fort Hood in 1953.
Gene spent a lifetime of service in his local churches including Trinity Evangelical Free (originally Kimbro Evangelical Free and then Crestview Evangelical Free) and Grace Covenant Church. Gene and Nell most recently had joined First Baptist Church in Pflugerville on December 2, 2001 where Gene served as a Deacon and member of the Finance Committee.
Gene leaves a tremendous legacy evidenced by all the lives he touched and influenced along the way. He will be greatly missed, but we have the assurance we will be reunited with him one day.
Visitation will be from 5:00pm - 8:00pm, Thursday March 7, 2024 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks funeral Home in Pflugerville. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday March 8, 2024 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks funeral Home in Pflugerville.
Officiant for the service will be grandson, Jeffrey Dyke, and serving as pallbearers will be grandsons Brian Roberts, Brooks Roberts, Blake Roberts, Dylan Thompson, Wesley Thompson, Justin Swanberg, and Tyler Swanberg and grandson-in-law Roman Arguelles. Honorary pallbearer is grandson Mitchell Thompson.
The family would like to express our sincerest thanks to The Springs of Austin, Altus Hospice and all of the staff who cared for him so lovingly and compassionately in his final month.
